WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Byron Dorgan calls it “a shocking miscarriage of justice.”

The North Dakota Democrat is angered by Iran’s sentencing of an American journalist who was convicted of spying and sentenced to eight years in prison.

The journalist, Roxana Saberi, is a native of Fargo, N.D., and had been living in Iran for six years. She had worked as a freelance reporter for several news organizations, including National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corp.

Dorgan says Iran held a secret trial and will not make public any evidence. He says the Iranians have sentenced an American citizen to eight years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit.

The senator is urging the Tehran government to show compassion, release Saberi, allow her to leave Iran and return to the U.S.
