LOUISVILLE, KY. (AP) - Jockey Garrett Gomez is placing his Kentucky Derby bet on Pioneerof the Nile.
Gomez said Sunday he’ll ride trainer Bob Baffert’s 3-year-old star in the May 2 Derby, a decision his agent Ron Anderson said was a “ridiculously tough call.”
Gomez chose Pioneerof the Nile over Dunkirk, citing his four-race winning streak with the colt that included a victory in the Santa Anita Derby.
Pioneerof the Nile, son of 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, is considered one of the early Derby favorites. The Derby will be Pioneerof the Nile’s first start on a dirt surface.
Dunkirk finished second to Quality Road in the Florida Derby with Gomez aboard on March 28.
Gomez is winless in five Derby starts.
