PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD (AP) - President Barack Obama says Cuba should release political prisoners, afford greater freedoms and reduce fees on money sent from the United States to Cuba.
Obama said Sunday that U.S. policy toward to Cuba isn’t going to change overnight, but freedom for the island nation remains the ultimate goal. He says decades-old policy hasn’t worked the way it was meant to and deserves another look.
The president says it would be foolish to think that ignoring Cuba would bring about change in Cuba’s government. Obama says policies formulated before he was born should be re-evaluated.
Obama said he was encouraged by signals sent from Cuban President Hugo Chavez and that he sees an opening for progress.
