With the billions of dollars it has to identify genuine threats and targets, one wonders why the Department of Homeland Security is forced to rely for its intelligence regarding security concerns on information provided by the left-leaning Southern Poverty Law Center. As Michelle Malkin notes (” ’Right-wing extremism’ alarm,” Opinion, Thursday), the department apparently has discarded acceptable law enforcement procedure in favor of political profiling.

Virtually anyone who opposes President Obama and his policies by exercising his or her First Amendment rights can be labeled an “extremist” and thereby be subjected to the full weight of intrusive government scrutiny. Whether it be disagreement over taxes or immigration or being a returning veteran, government bureaucrats have an excuse to turn their eyes and ears on ordinary citizens. Given these early indicators of the administration’s behavior, this report is an ominous sign.
