ANNAPOLIS, Md. | The Department of Natural Resources says last weekend’s firearms deer hunt netted a 20 percent increase over 2008’s opening weekend harvest.

Officials say deer hunters reported taking 19,054 deer, despite windy conditions on Saturday.

Deer hunting is allowed on certain Sundays in 19 counties on private land.

The deer firearm season runs through Dec. 12.
