SIGNING DAY SHOWMANSHIP
It seems national signing day this year wasn’t just about putting pen to paper for the top college football recruits in the country. It was also about who could put on the best show while doing so.
Taking top honors was Dre Kirkpatrick, the No. 1 cornerback in the country according to Rivals.com.
Kirkpatrick sat a table in a packed high school gym in Gadsden, Ala., on Wednesday, flanked by an orange Texas hat and a red Alabama hat.
Kirkpatrick picked up the Texas hat, looked at it for a moment and said, “This hat right here, it ain’t got no swagger.”
Kirkpatrick then reached under the table and pulled out a black duffel bag. He plopped the bag atop the Longhorns hat and unzipped it, revealing a red gift box inside. With flashbulbs popping, Kirkpatrick removed the lid from the box and produced a small black bag. After a few moments of fumbling, Kirkpatrick fished out a black hat.
It bore Alabama’s signature “A.” The crowd roared its approval.
TWT Five ” Reasons the NHL needs fighting
The head of the NHL Players’ Association is calling for rules regulating fighting in the NHL, and there appears to be a growing push to get rid of it altogether. Here’s why that’s a bad idea:
1. Fighting is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. You won’t go to a game and hear fans yell, “Oh no, [insert enforcer’s name here], please don’t fight!”
2. It’s been a part of the game for more than a century. Why ban it now?
3. Wayne Gretzky’s career would have been shorter had he not had Dave Semenko and Marty McSorley around.
4. When a team gets down by a few goals, there’s no other way to spark the lineup.
5. The term “Gordie Howe hat trick” (a goal, an assist and a fight) would be effectively banished.
