A 68-year-old woman fell onto the tracks at the Gallery Place-Chinatown stop on Metrorail’s Red Line at about 9:30 Tuesday morning, a Metro spokeswoman said.

There are major delays on the Red Line.

Metro identified the person as a 68-year-old woman but did not release any more information on her identity.

The woman was stuck between the crawl space as of 9:50 a.m.

“The crowds at the station are obviously unprecedented,” said Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein, who advised passengers to stand at least 2 feet back from the edge of the platforms.

Metro shut down the Metro Center and Gallery Place-Chinatown stations while Metro police began investigating the cause of the accident.
