DAYTON, OHIO (AP) - About 150 people carrying folders stuffed with resumes streamed into a job fair as it opened Tuesday to meet with about 30 potential employers in a basketball arena.
The Dayton job fair was held at Wright State University and was expected to draw a huge turnout as the jobless rate in Ohio continues to rise.
In the past few years, thousands of Dayton-area workers at General Motors Corp. and auto supplier Delphi Corp. have been laid off. And as many as 8,000 workers at an airport in nearby Wilmington may lose their jobs if cargo carrier DHL pulls out as planned.
Among Tuesday’s job seekers was Lisa Shrewsbury, an advertising manager from suburban Huber Heights who lost her job four months ago. Shrewsbury said she hoped to make contacts that will lead her to a job.
Thousands have flocked to recent job fairs in New York, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Detroit and other cities.
