SACRAMENTO, CALIF. (AP) - The Sacramento City Council has agreed to move about 150 people from a homeless encampment that put the city in the international spotlight.
The council approved a proposal by Mayor Kevin Johnson to add beds at local shelters and close the so-called “tent city” by the end of April.
The tents and tarpaulins about a mile northeast of the Capitol drew widespread attention after they were featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” last month.
The city of 476,000 had about 2,700 homeless people last year.
The plan approved Tuesday calls for the city to spend $880,000 and Sacramento County to add $150,000. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was scheduled to visit one of the shelters Wednesday.
