GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — GenVec Inc., a biotechnology company, said Wednesday it agreed to work with Merial, a producer of vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease, to develop and commercialize its own technology for a foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.

Under the deal, Merial, the animal health unit of French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis, will be responsible for all costs related to developing and commercializing foot-and-mouth disease vaccines through the agreement.

GenVec will receive development milestones and royalties on sales.

GenVec’s vaccine approach is developed without using live or killed virus materials so it can be produced cost effectively, GenVec said.
