Northwest Washington’s Cleveland Park, named after President Grover Cleveland, who kept a summer house in the neighborhood, has become one of the city’s most sought-after communities.

Eclectic architecture, along with parks and playgrounds, give the residential streets charm. Single-family homes representing Queen Anne, classic Colonial, Georgian Revival, Prairie, Tudor, Victorian, Craftsman and modern architectural styles can be found on the neighborhood’s curving streets and rolling hills.

In addition to the distinctive architecture, residents of the area have easy access to two Cleveland Park business districts. Along Connecticut Avenue are dozens of restaurants and shops, the National Zoo, a public library and the beloved Uptown movie theater with its old-fashioned balcony and oversized screen.

The Cleveland Park Metro station links residents to the rest of the city and surrounding suburbs. On the opposite side of the neighborhood are the shops and restaurants along Wisconsin Avenue, along with the National Cathedral.

The Cleveland Park Historic District, bordered by Tilden Street, Woodley Road and Connecticut and Wisconsin avenues, includes a wide variety of home styles. Homeowners within the historic district must request permission to make changes to the exterior of their home.

The 102-year-old home at 3311 Macomb St. NW, custom-built in 1908, rests on a corner lot surrounded by landscaped gardens with privacy hedges. On the market for $2,188,000, this historic five-bedroom home features a classic brick Colonial-style exterior.

Inside, the home was restored and renovated in 2005 and 2006 to meet such needs as cable, phone and Internet connections in most rooms while keeping intact the essential architectural integrity of the property.

A brick walk with lawn and plants on either side leads to the covered front porch, a quiet spot with a view down Macomb Street. The arched portico above the porch echoes the arched front door, which has sidelights.

The back of the property includes a one-car garage and a deck off the breakfast area that leads to a stone-and-slate patio that has space for a hammock and a dining area. Beyond the patio is a fenced yard with mature trees. The owner replaced the slate roof on the house and garage, added new copper gutters and a new copper roof over the sunroom.

Inside, this home has three finished levels and a partially finished lower level. The original hardwood flooring has been refinished, and the owner replastered the ceilings and walls in an antique style. All four full baths and the powder room have been renovated, and some include antique-style claw-foot tubs.

The front door opens into a foyer with a powder room and a coat closet. The hardwood staircase sits behind the powder room and coat closet and is accessible from the living room and the kitchen.

To the left of the foyer is the living room, which extends from the front of the home to the back. The living room has a wood-burning fireplace with a mantel and a brick hearth. Two sets of French doors flank the fireplace. The living room includes a window seat at the front of the home with built-in bookcases on either side. At the far end of the living room are more built-in bookcases.

The French doors lead to the sunroom, an all-season space wrapped in windows, with a built-in bookcase, hardwood flooring and a brick wall with a wood-burning fireplace.

On the opposite side of the main level are the formal dining room, kitchen and breakfast area. The dining room includes a beamed ceiling, hardwood flooring and built-in shelves and cabinets.

The renovated kitchen has been designed for style, for entertaining and to meet the high standards of a gourmet chef. The kitchen includes hardwood flooring, a double window over the sink and another window in the corner, plus upgraded stainless steel appliances, including a six-burner stove, a double-door refrigerator and two dishwashers. The room has custom-designed wood cabinets with concealed lighting and granite counters, including a corner breakfast bar.

The kitchen opens into the breakfast room, which has walls of windows on two sides and a glass door opening onto the deck. This room also has hardwood flooring and a door to the garage. The garage has skylights and a cathedral ceiling and easily could be converted to a family room.

On the first of two upper levels, the master bedroom extends from the front of the house to the back and has a wood-burning fireplace. The master bedroom has windows on three sides, two closets, a window seat and built-in cabinets. The master bath has been expanded and renovated with a sleek, oversized shower with glass doors.

This level includes another renovated bath with a claw-foot tub. Each of the two additional bedrooms on this floor has two windows and a walk-in closet. A linen closet is in the hall.

At the back of this level is a study that also can function as an upper-level sunroom, with windows on three sides and hardwood flooring. The study has a closet with shelves and overlooks the back garden and woods.

The finished top level of this home has two charming bedrooms with sloped ceilings and dormer windows. Each bedroom has hardwood flooring and custom-designed windows, including half-moon and Palladian windows. In addition, these rooms have built-in dresser drawers and closets. A linen closet is in the hall. These bedrooms share a renovated full bath with a claw-foot tub.

The lower level includes both finished and unfinished spaces. The finished section features a living area with a door to the side yard, a closet and a kitchen with a stove, refrigerator and sink. Adjacent to the kitchen is a full bath with a shower.

The lower level also has an oversized laundry and storage room along with another utility and storage room.

In addition to maintaining the old-fashioned charm of this home while updating the kitchen and baths, the owner installed a new gas boiler for the heat system, dual-zone central air conditioning and a new water heater; replaced the wiring as needed; and added cable, phone and Internet connections in most rooms. The closets all have lights, and the bathrooms have new fans.
