WASHINGTON | Metro’s board has approved fare increases to take effect June 27, pending final approval on June 24.

With Thursday’s move, peak Metrorail fares will increase from $1.65 to $1.95.

A new system of peak-of-the-peak pricing, which will cost an additional 20 cents for trips that are taken weekdays between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and between 4:30 and 6 p.m., was approved. That will be implemented on Aug. 1.

Metrobus fares will increase from $1.25 to $1.50 for those who pay with SmarTrip and from $1.35 to $1.70 for those who pay cash.

The increases are expected to generate more than $108 million to help close a $189 million budget shortfall.
