PARIS (AP) - Christie’s in Paris is auctioning off more than 60 portraits and fashion photographs by Richard Avedon this week.

The auction represents the largest group of the influential photographer’s work ever to reach the market and is expected to raise $6 million.

One famous photo shows a model in a Dior gown posing with elephants. Portraits range from shots of the Beatles to snapshots of people from the American West.

The auction Saturday will raise money for the Richard Avedon Foundation endowment fund.

The American photographer created the foundation shortly before his death in 2004 to encourage the study and protection of his work and legacy, but the foundation said Thursday it is heading toward becoming a philanthropic organization.
