When architect Rula Jawdat of Architecture+ in the District first saw her future home at 4515 Q Lane NW, it was a fairly ordinary rambler, built in 1950. But Ms. Jawdat’s vision was broader than the rambler, which became the foundation of her design for a four-level contemporary home.

That residence, which she designed and built in 1990, is on the market for $1,199,000. This distinctive home is filled with natural light and flexible spaces. Ms. Jawdat and her family are particularly appreciative of the light that fills every room, often through windows on more than one side of a room.

Wide, gray-painted wood steps lead to the front door of this pale gray home, which has a modern facade, including sleek columns and metal handrails matching the railings on three exterior Juliet balconies. Gray porcelain tile flooring in the foyer extends through the home to the kitchen and breakfast area, while the rest of the floors are of refinished oak with darker wood insets framing each room. The entire interior of this home is painted bright white to reflect and expand the light in every space.

Adjacent to the foyer is the open living room, a soaring two-story space with two-story windows at the front and a ceiling fan overhead. The living room includes a wood-burning fireplace with a slate surround. Two interior balconies on the first of two upper levels overlook the living room.

The living room opens into a separate dining room with French doors that open onto the flagstone patio. The patio, also accessible from the breakfast area, is a low-maintenance space with plenty of room for entertaining or relaxing in the sun or shade. Gardeners can add garden beds or pots of plants, and there is plenty of space for a grill and dining area. A distinctive turquoise spiral staircase leads from the patio to the top level of the home, providing a separate exterior entrance for the top-floor rooms as well as access through the hall to the rooftop deck.

Adjacent to the dining room are the open breakfast area and kitchen, both of which have track lighting and multiple oversized windows facing the backyard. Glass doors lead from the breakfast area to the yard.

The sleek kitchen has dark gray porcelain tile flooring with a matching backsplash and a center island. A picture window on the side wall adds even more light to this room, which has white open and glass-front cabinets and white appliances.

The main level also has a bedroom or home office with hardwood flooring, a closet and an exterior Juliet balcony. This room can be accessed from the foyer or the hall. Adjacent to the bedroom is a full bath.

On the first of two upper levels are the two interior balconies overlooking the living room. Their metal railings match the exterior railings on the front steps and balconies. The master-bedroom suite includes a high ceiling, a Juliet balcony, a sitting area and floor-to-ceiling windows. The master suite includes a deep walk-in closet with extra shelving, and a double-door closet.

The master bath has dark-gray tile flooring, a whirlpool tub tucked under a double window, a separate tile shower and two vanities. This sleek room has high ceilings, recessed lighting and several niches for storage, plants or artwork. In addition to the window above the whirlpool tub, a second double window brings in light from the side of the house.

This level also has a second bedroom with French doors to the interior balcony overlooking the living room, a double-door closet and a tall window.

Hardwood stairs lead to the top level, which also is accessible from the spiral staircase to the patio. The upper level can be converted into an in-law suite.

The top level includes a fourth bedroom with a wall of closets and French doors to the rooftop deck. A full bath is adjacent to this bedroom, along with an oversized linen closet. Nearby is a fifth bedroom with a closet and tall windows.

The top level also has a kitchenette and laundry equipment for use as an au pair or in-law suite. Adjacent to the kitchenette is a family room with an exterior Juliet balcony and French doors to the deck. A full bath is next to the family room.

The expansive rooftop deck presents a perfect place for entertaining or relaxing any time of day. With the kitchenette just inside, entertaining is even easier.

The finished lower level includes a recreation room and an oversized laundry room with extra storage. In addition, this level has access to the two-car tandem garage, which has more storage.

Ms. Jawdat’s design makes it possible for nearly every room to have more than one function. Residents can opt to use the main-level bedroom, the second bedroom or either of the upper-level bedrooms as office space, an art studio or a playroom. The Juliet balconies and the multiple sets of French doors enable additional breezes to flow into the home so that it seems to be perpetually filled with light and air.

This home rests on a tiny street just off Foxhall Road in the Palisades neighborhood of Northwest Washington, with quick access to the shops, restaurants and nightlife of Georgetown as well as the shops, library, community center and restaurants in Palisades.
