AUXERRE, FRANCE (AP) - U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra returned from a three-week layoff caused by a sprained neck, playing the entire match Tuesday night as Saint-Etienne lost to Auxerre 2-0 in the French League Cup quarterfinals.

Bocanegra was hurt Oct. 17 during a league match when he fell after a clash of heads with Nice forward Eric Mouloungui.

Benoit Pedretti and Dariusz Dudka converted penalty kicks as Auxerre advanced to the semifinals.
