MOSCOW (AP) - Police in Moscow say they have opened a probe against a man accused of running a network of online pharmacies promoted by junk e-mail messages.
Police told Russian media at a press conference in central Moscow that they have launched a criminal investigation against Igor Gusev on charges of illegal business activities. They said that Gusev is believed to have operated a Web site that promoted online pharmacies with spam e-mail in the U.S., Canada and other countries. They said he sold counterfeit products.
Police said Gusev’s business generated an estimated $120 million in sales over the past 3 1/2 years.
They said Tuesday that they had searched Gusev’s Moscow apartment and would ask Interpol to help track him down. He is believed to have fled abroad. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
