While many people associate Cleveland Park in Northwest Washington with charming Cape Cod cottages and Victorian homes with deep front porches, this sought-after community also is home to a few contemporary-style homes.

The home at 3643 Tilden St. NW, on the market for $2,175,000, offers a dramatic example of a contemporary-style renovation that opened the floor plan and filled the home with light and views of the surrounding trees. Set on a nearly 10,000-square-foot lot on a cul-de-sac, this home has expansive private grounds with mature landscaping.

The homeowners and their architect worked together to create a home that works equally well for family life and for entertaining, but they did not need to do any work to set it in a prime location. The residence, built in 1956 and renovated in 2009, is within a short walk of the Cleveland Park Metro station, the Uptown movie theater, restaurants, shops and parks.

The newly designed home has an open floor plan with myriad oversized windows and skylights along with space for displaying artwork in a gallerylike setting. The stainless steel front door features translucent glass panes and opens into a spacious foyer with two windows, recessed lighting, cement flooring and a view straight through from the front of the house to the back windows.

A pocket door with a porthole window leads into a library with cherry-red-paneled walls, built-in bookcases and dark wood floors. Just beyond the foyer and library is an expansive living room with ebony-stained wood floors, two seating areas, a wood-burning fireplace and recessed lighting. Most rooms also have lighting designed to enhance art displays. The living room has two walnut wood pillars, each with interior storage space for audio and Internet components. Several windows, including a bay window, overlook the private rear grounds.

Adjacent to the living room is an open dining room with pendant lighting and seating for 12 guests. The dining room is open to the living room and kitchen and includes a glass door to the deck.

The modern kitchen includes cement flooring and a built-in banquette area. Two walnut wood pillars conceal high-end appliances accessible through hinged sliding glass doors. The custom-designed cabinets include deep drawers and have white Corian counters complemented by a glass backsplash and under-cabinet halogen lighting.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a breakfast area with built-in seating and a doorway to a hall with skylights and a door to a second deck. Just off this hall are a powder room and an art studio. The art studio has skylights and walls of windows for natural light, a deep artist’s sink and access to the front and back decks.

A custom-designed steel staircase with ebony-stained oak treads leads from the main level to the upper level, which has an open landing with pendant lighting and additional lighting for art displays. Just off the landing is a music room, sitting room or playroom, offering flexible upper-level space for a variety of activities.

The master bedroom fills one corner of the upper level and has a bay window and a triple window, bleached oak flooring, a separate dressing room with two closets, and recessed lighting. The adjacent master bath has an Italian porcelain floor, a half-moon window overlooking the rear grounds and an oversized shower with Italian porcelain tiles.

The second bedroom has windows on two sides, ebony-stained wood floors and a walk-in closet. The third bedroom has a bay window, walls of closets and wall-to-wall carpeting, while the fourth bedroom has ebony-stained floors and windows on two sides. These three bedrooms share a hall bath with a vessel sink and Italian porcelain tile flooring.

The finished attic level has a home office, studio or playroom surrounded by storage space.

The finished lower level has a sitting room with a glass door opening onto an expansive flagstone patio and deck. The exterior of this home also has a heated garage and covered outdoor storage space.

Inside, the lower level has a family room with a fireplace and recessed lighting, a full bath, two additional bedrooms and a game room or exercise room with wood floors. This level also has multiple closets and a tiled laundry room with high-efficiency laundry equipment and extra storage.
