LOS ANGELES (AP) - Placido Domingo has extended his contract as general director of the Los Angeles Opera through 2013.

The 70-year-old tenor has been general director of the company since 2003 after serving as artistic adviser from its inception in 1986 though 2000, when he became artistic director. He also has been general director of the Washington National Opera since 2003.

Domingo stars as Pablo Neruda on Thursday night when the Los Angeles Opera presents the world premiere of Daniel Catan’s “Il Postino,” based on the 1994 movie. It will be his 134th role.

In making the announcement Monday, the LA Opera said the contract runs through 2013, with a provision that it will renew automatically thereafter by mutual consent.
