NEW YORK (AP) — New York police on Thursday said a Nicaraguan official was found dead in a Bronx apartment with his throat slit.

Police said the 34-year-old man was found by his driver at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday. He was believed to be headed to the United Nations for the opening of the General Assembly’s annual meeting.

Police did not release the man’s name but said they believed him to be a consular official. His body was discovered just inside the door of his sixth-floor apartment, police said.

The door was ajar. A knife was recovered at the scene.

An assistant to Nicaragua’s ambassador to the United Nations, Maria Rubiales de Chamorro, said the mission couldn’t immediately release any information.
