Takoma Park is known for its charming Victorian and bungalow-style homes on picturesque tree-lined streets. One house on the market there combines the best of old and new.

Built in 1928, the house at 7402 Hancock Ave. has been gutted and completely renovated but retains its exterior 1920s-era charm. A large redesigned front porch welcomes visitors into the home and makes the most of the outdoor space. Before going in, guests may want to linger on the porch, as it seems more like a cozy outdoor room with its slate tile floor and bead-board ceiling.

The home, on the market for $725,000, has been redesigned to factor in considerations such as better use of space, lighting and accessibility. All of the interior and exterior doors have been replaced, and the home has all-new energy-efficient windows.

The open floor plan makes for a dramatic entrance. Bamboo floors are found throughout the main level, including in the living room.

A two-story addition built onto the back of the house this year added 836 square feet to the main level and 410 to the basement level.

A wood-burning fireplace with a brick surround helps turn the spacious living room into a warm and inviting space in which to entertain. In this floor plan, the kitchen sits directly behind the living room, making it the home’s central gathering hub.

State-of-the-art appliances in the kitchen include a side-by-side refrigerator, a five-burner range and a dishwasher. Additional features that complement the kitchen are earth-tone granite counters, 42-inch upgraded cabinets and recessed lighting. There’s also a handy built-in wine rack between the dining room and kitchen.

Just outside the kitchen space is a generously sized dining area that easily accommodates the owner’s eight-person dining table. The dining area blends seamlessly into the family room around the corner, where the crown molding and recessed lighting continue.

The airy dining room and family area are surrounded by walls of bright, sunny windows and glass doors. Perfect for summer entertaining is a 16-by-24-foot deck, complete with built-in seating, a table and plenty of storage. The high deck overlooks the private, fenced backyard, which is especially large in an area where many homes have much smaller lots.

The owners also recently installed a central music sound system with preinstalled speakers for indoor and outdoor enjoyment.

There are three sun-drenched bedrooms on the upper level and another bedroom on the lower level. Two of the upper-level bedrooms have high ceilings, including the master suite, which features a cathedral ceiling highlighted by recessed lights.

The master suite also has his-and-her closets, including a lighted walk-in closet. The master bath has ceramic tile flooring surrounded by travertine accents and a double vanity. The home’s 3 1/2 bathrooms all feature trendy vanities, Italian travertine, ceramic and glass tiles.

The master bedroom has bamboo floors; the other two bedrooms on this level have carpeting, and all have recessed light fixtures.

The bedroom on the lower level also is carpeted. This spare bedroom could work well as an in-law suite with its private lower-level location and nearby bathroom. Just as attractive as the upper-level baths, this bathroom features marble tile flooring, a glass tile shower and a relaxing rain-style shower head.

The lower level has plush carpeting, and there’s an open area that could be used as a recreation room or children’s playroom.

Additional new features in this renovated home include new plumbing and electrical wiring, new central air conditioning and gas heating with new ductwork throughout and new subflooring on each floor.

While there is a driveway for parking, the owners built the deck to provide an option to build a fully insulated two-car garage underneath it, if desired.
