Takoma Park police say a man who stabbed a driver during a carjacking attempt was later fatally shot as he struggled with an officer.

Police say the 19-year-old man tried to steal a Porsche at a gas station on New Hampshire Avenue on Saturday afternoon and stabbed the resisting owner with what appeared to be a steak knife. The owner was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The man then took off in a Ford Focus with officers in pursuit, striking three occupied vehicles before flipping over.

As the man fled on foot police say an officer tried to subdue him with a stun gun and as they struggled, a second officer arrived and shot the suspect.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
