To see who’s ahead in the Republican race for president, there is no need to check polls. Just look at the latest negative articles on the front page of The Washington Post.

First it was Mitt Romney’s religion, then Rick Perry’s hunting-camp name, then Herman Cain’s alleged sexual harassment. Now we read various things about Newt Gingrich, with last Sunday’s front page, plus a full inside page, devoted to slamming him. No need to wait for the Post’s election endorsement - the paper has been telegraphing it for months: no Republican.
