BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (AP) - A government spokesman says President Cristina Fernandez will be operated on for papillary thyroid carcinoma on Jan. 4.

Spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro says the carcinoma was detected during a routine medical exam on Dec. 22.

Scoccimarro said Tuesday that doctors confirmed that the cancer hadn’t metastasized or affected her lymph nodes.

The 58-year-old Fernandez will be operated on in Buenos’ Aires Hospital Austral on Jan. 4, 2012. She will rest and take time off from her duties until Jan. 24.
