LOS ANGELES (AP) — Stephen Dorff knew he had to play the lead role in “Somewhere.”

He says his mother, who had died a year earlier, always wanted him to play a role with heart, and Dorff won the part on the first anniversary of her death.

He was in France, where writer-director Sofia Coppola lives, and when she called to tell him he got the part, he saw the Eiffel Tower light up.

Dorff says he “felt my mom with me for the first time in a year that was pretty dark and pretty empty.”

In the film, Dorff plays bad-boy actor Johnny Marco, who lives a party-drenched lifestyle until his young daughter unexpectedly comes to live with him.

“Somewhere” expands to seven more cities — Atlanta, Detroit, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento and St. Louis — on Friday.
