TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a man who took a woman hostage during a bank robbery in Maryland has been killed.

A Takoma Park police official says the suspect had something that looked like a bomb taped to him during the incident Friday morning. A suspicious device also was reported inside the bank. Both devices ended up being plastic foam.

Police say the suspect was holding a gun to the hostage’s head when he used her as a shield to walk out of the bank.

Officials say at least two civilians were injured, as well as a police officer. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Video shows a man walking out of a Capitol One bank on University Boulevard toward police officers with the woman. As he was backing away from police, he tripped over a pile of snow. The woman managed to escape.

Police opened fire shortly afterward.
