When Giuseppe “Joe” Farruggio, owner of Il Canale restaurant in Georgetown and two Joe’s Place Pizza and Pasta restaurants in Northern Virginia, purchased the home at 1355 Windy Hill Road in McLean, Va., six years ago, the kitchen obviously was a big priority.

Not only did Mr. Farruggio update the appliances, he also opened the walls and created an entertaining space where 40 or 50 friends and family members can gather on holidays to enjoy food, wine and warmth. Nearly everyone who visits the home covets the expansive wood dining table and benches that were designed to fit in the dining area in front of a bank of windows.

On the market for $1,395,000, this contemporary-style home is filled with natural light that pours into every room through oversized windows. Warm, neutral colors add to the beauty of this home, which has crown molding, recessed lighting and polished hardwood flooring on all three levels.

Realtor Esther Drourr, with McEnearney Associates, who sold this residence to Mr. Farruggio six years ago, says he has made approximately $250,000 to $300,000 in improvements to the property.

The professionally landscaped three-quarter-acre site offers plenty of privacy for the family and guests, yet the home is minutes from McLean’s shops and villages and less than eight miles from the District. The grounds include an asphalt drive with extra parking for guests, a two-car garage with additional storage space, and mature trees, perennial plants and lawns on each side. This all-brick home has wooden double doors with leaded-glass inserts that reveal a glimpse of the back deck.

The maintenance-free Trex deck off the main level includes steps leading to the lower patio, which has a hot tub. A covered patio with brick walls is adjacent to the hot tub, and the lower level also has a second covered patio. Trees, lawn and garden beds are glimpsed from every window.

The open floor plan on the main level creates an easy setting for parties large and small, with plenty of areas for seating. The front doors open onto a foyer with views of the backyard, the living room and the dining area. The foyer, like the rest of the home, has crown molding, recessed lighting and hardwood flooring. Just off the foyer is a powder room with a sleek vessel-style sink and natural oak hardwood flooring. Glass double doors open from the end of the foyer onto the main-level deck.

The two-story living room to the left of the foyer features a window wall with three rows of oversized windows facing the deck and backyard. This room has two ceiling fans and a gas fireplace with a marble hearth and surround. A gallery overlooks the living room from the upper level.

Adjoining the living room is a charming sitting area with two floor-to-ceiling windows and glass double doors leading to the side yard. The sitting area creates a cozy reading nook or could be used as a music area, with space for a piano.

Beyond the living room is a bedroom wing with three bedrooms and a full bath. One of the bedrooms includes a walk-in closet, and all three have oversized windows to let in an abundance of natural light. One bedroom includes two double windows set at right angles on the corner of the room. The full bath has ceramic tile flooring, an oak vanity and a combination tub and shower.

On the opposite side of the living room and foyer are the other entertaining rooms of the home. The dining area includes a wall of windows with plantation shutters and is open to the family room, which has natural oak hardwood flooring, crown molding and recessed lighting.

The kitchen features sleek cabinets, granite counters and a peninsula with extra storage and counter space. This room also includes upgraded stainless steel appliances, recessed and under-cabinet lighting, and a spacious walk-in pantry. A second pantry is at the top of the stairs, which lead to a door into the garage.

Natural oak stairs lead to the upper-level gallery overlooking the living room. The gallery can function as a home office or sitting area, with plenty of space for a large desk or other furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows at the back of the gallery frame the trees of the side yard, while the upper reaches of the living-room windows offer a view facing in the opposite direction so this area receives natural light all day.

The master suite, a generously sized room with natural oak hardwood flooring and crown molding, includes two walk-in closets and a cedar closet. The bedroom has plenty of space for a sitting area in addition to the bedroom area and has a triple window along the rear wall and two double windows that wrap around a corner.

The adjacent master bath includes ceramic tile flooring, a separate shower with glass doors and a deep whirlpool tub surrounded by wine-colored ceramic tile. Ms. Drourr says reglazing the tile would cost approximately $300 to $400 if the new owners prefer another color. A double window sits just above the whirlpool tub.

The upper level also includes a guest bedroom with hardwood flooring, a walk-in closet and a private full bath with ceramic tile flooring.

The finished lower level offers even more space for casual entertaining or additional bedrooms. This level includes hardwood flooring and recessed lighting and has an open floor plan. The center of this level is a recreation room with a gas fireplace that has a floor-to-ceiling brick surround. At one end of the recreation room is a nook that makes a perfect computer center. On the opposite side of the fireplace is a game area set in front of four floor-to-ceiling windows. Nearby are a walk-in closet and a utility-and-storage closet.

Just beyond the game room are a full bath with ceramic tile flooring and a sauna. Near the sauna, a glass door leads to the covered patio and hot tub.

The opposite side of the lower level has a mirrored fitness room with a closet with laundry equipment, a utility closet and a standard closet. This room could function as an additional bedroom if more space is needed. The lower level could function as an au pair suite.

The owner replaced all three zoned heating and air conditioning systems, and the home also has a central vacuum system, a security system, two humidifiers and a whole-house water filter.

Mr. Farruggio’s Italian roots add warmth and charm to this McLean oasis, which seems more like a new home than one built 25 years ago.
