CAMERON PARK, Texas — A South Texas preschooler has died after becoming trapped in the family’s hot van and a parent is expected to be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio says the mother of 3-year-old Francisco Estrada will face charges. Lucio says the boy apparently wandered away and got into the disabled van, parked outside the residence, but didn’t know how to get out.

A justice of the peace Tuesday afternoon pronounced the boy dead at the scene in Cameron Park, just north of Brownsville. His body was discovered about two hours after the family noticed the youngster was missing.

The National Weather Service says temperatures topped 90 degrees Tuesday in the Brownsville area.
