An infant was killed Friday morning in Laurel when a mother tried to protect her other child from a car drifting backward in a driveway, Prince George’s County police said.

The mother pulled into the private driveway at the 8300 block of Montpelier Drive to drop off her children shortly after 9 a.m., said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a police spokesman.

However, the car was not secured in park and went in reverse toward the older child, who had exited the vehicle and was behind it for unknown reasons, he said.

Johnson said the mother, who had her infant in her arms, rushed back to help the child, but all three were struck by the vehicle. The infant died, and the mother and older child were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police did not have further information or the identities of the people involved.
