That the federal government is wiser than you and me in spending our money is a seminal part of the liberal catechism. This belief is so essential to the progressive platform that card-carrying liberals no longer question the idea, for to do so would put into play the central premise on which the progressive program rests.

If one simply accepts in a reflexive manner that Beltway politicians and bureaucrats are the ultimate authorities, then it follows that confiscatory income-tax rates and burdensome regulations are necessary for the public weal. Simple, isn’t it?
