The Chevy Chase neighborhood in Northwest Washington was developed in the early 20th century along an electric streetcar route. Today, the traditional Colonial, Cape Cod and Victorian homes in the community offer space for family life along with proximity to restaurants, shops and Metro stations for easy urban living.

The home at 5015 41st St. NW, on the market for $1,049,000, was built in 1923. This Cape Cod-style home, which rests on a large lot with a spacious, level yard, was renovated and expanded in 2005 to include a serene master-suite retreat. With three finished levels, this home has flexible rooms that can include as many as six bedrooms matched with four full baths, a powder room, two laundry areas and two kitchens.

The stone and wood-siding exterior of this home offers plenty of curb appeal, starting with the newly repaired front stone wall that encloses the gently sloping front lawn. Painted wood steps lead to the charming front porch, which has a beadboard ceiling, two ceiling fans, a white railing and two columns. This porch, set back far enough from the street for privacy, provides the perfect place to sip a cold drink and relax on a warm summer evening.

The front of the home is dotted with multiple windows of various sizes and shapes, with a repeating string of transoms on most of the exterior windows and inside above doorways. The front door has a glass storm door and sidelights.

Inside, gleaming hardwood flooring extends from the foyer throughout most of the main level, and hardwood stairs lead to the upper and lower levels. To the left of the foyer are the formal rooms, including a living room with a gas fireplace flanked by windows. Two more windows face the front lawn.

The living room opens into the formal dining room, which has a chandelier and windows on two sides. Adjacent to the dining room is the renovated kitchen, which has a distinctive stone floor, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, recessed and undercabinet lighting and polished wood cabinets. A glass door leads from the kitchen to the small back porch, which has a few steps down to the expansive backyard.

The fully fenced yard includes two gates, one a double gate leading to a concrete driveway. The level lawn offers a great place for children to play and adults to entertain. Stone paths lead to a patio next to the fence, and garden beds offer space for vegetables and flowers.

Back inside, on the opposite side of the foyer from the living room, is the family room. The family room has recessed lighting and windows on two sides. Nearby is a full, renovated bath with a pedestal sink. Just beyond this bathroom is a corner library with windows on two sides and a closet. The library can be used as a first-floor bedroom.

Upstairs, the master-bedroom suite is a true retreat, with plenty of space, soaring cathedral ceilings and a wall of glass, including transoms and French doors that open onto a private balcony overlooking the backyard. The master sitting room is adjacent to this balcony and includes a ceiling fan. Two oversized walk-in closets are next to the sitting area.

On the opposite side of the sitting area is an oversized bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows with transoms, a cathedral ceiling and a deep niche perfect for a desk, a dresser or an entertainment center. The luxurious master bath has ceramic tile flooring and complementary tile walls with stone accents. The bath includes a glass-enclosed stone shower, a separate soaking tub, recessed lighting, a high ceiling and a double-sink vanity.

This level also has a second bedroom with windows on two sides, two closets and a niche in between that’s perfect for a desk or a dresser. Nearby is a charming former sleeping porch set one step above the hall and wrapped in five floor-to-ceiling windows with transoms and two additional windows at either end. This bedroom has a cathedral ceiling, recessed lighting and a double-door closet.

Nearby is a renovated full bath with ceramic tile flooring, a combination tub and shower, a window and a pedestal sink. The upper level also has a closet with a front-loading washer and dryer and a large linen closet.

The finished lower level can be accessed from hardwood stairs inside the house as well as a side entrance from the driveway. This level has two bedrooms with ceramic tile flooring, one with a double-door closet and the other with two double-door closets.

The entire lower level could be used as an in-law suite, as it includes a full kitchen with a refrigerator, a stove, a microwave and a double sink with a nearby pantry. The lower level also has a powder room for guests and a full bath with a shower. There also are several storage rooms on this level.
