The U.S. men’s eight, including David Banks (Potomac) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale), just missed a medal in the most prestigious rowing event. The U.S. finished three-tenths of a second behind bronze-winning Britain to take fourth, with Germany winning gold and Canada the silver.


* Andy Najar (D.C. United) played 60 minutes and received a yellow card in Honduras’ 0-0 draw with Japan. Honduras advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Brazil on Saturday.

* Farrah Hall (Annapolis) finished 18th in both RS:X (windsurfing) qualification races and she stands 18th overall after two days.
