In his Aug. 3 opinion article Pat Boone makes a commendable plea to the public officials to halt their attacks on Chick-fil-A (“Lay off Chick-fil-A”). What is most troubling in the Chick-fil-A brouhaha are the threats from the mayors of Chicago, Boston, Washington and San Francisco to sanction the fast-food chain because of the company president’s religious views on homosexual marriage.

I hope none of us have forgotten that in Germany during the 1930s, Jewish businesses were boycotted, closed and the owners harassed because of their religious faith. The “democratic” mayors in question threatened the right of Chick-fil-A’s chief to free speech and religion and attacked him through his business. They have also challenged the right of their constituents to eat wherever they please. We cannot stand for anything like this in America. Yet President Obama remains conspicuously silent.
