Police have identified the driver killed when her BMW ran off the road Monday night and crashed into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Landover.

She has been identified as District resident Hellena Louise Smith, 29, Prince George’s County Police Department said Tuesday.

Ms. Smith was declared dead on the scene after she was thrown from the BMW after hitting the building.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. along the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, police said.

Ms. Smith reportedly was speeding and veered off the road, hitting trash cans and other objects outside a Citgo gas station and a vehicle that was backing out of a parking space at KFC before crashing into the restaurant.

Her passenger, a 31-year-old man, and the driver of the struck vehicle, a 68-year-old man, were taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Ms. Smith previously faced charges of going 91 mph in a 55 mph zone, driving on a suspended license and driving without current license plates on January 22.
