MARANA, ARIZ. (AP) - Hunter Mahan and Mark Wilson have advanced to the semifinals in the Match Play Championship. It guarantees an American in the championship match for the first time since Tiger Woods won in 2008.

Mahan played the shortest quarterfinal match in the 14-year history of this event. He won five holes simply by making par, and closed out Matt Kuchar, 6 and 5, with a short birdie putt on the par-5 13th.

Wilson defeated Peter Hanson of Sweden, 4 and 3, seizing control when Hanson lost control of his driver.

Rory McIlroy was 1 up through eight holes over Bae Sang-moon, while Lee Westwood was 1 up over Martin Laird through seven holes.

McIlroy or Westwood would be No. 1 in the world by winning this World Golf Championship.
