LOGAN, Ohio (AP) — A man who survived an Ohio murder-suicide that left four dead says he was spared because he has children.

A 911 recording captured Ralph Sowers telling a police dispatcher he was in the room when one of his aunts was shot.

Sowers says in the recording released Tuesday by the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office that his stepfather let him leave because of his children.

The 36-year-old Sowers drove about half a mile to find a cell signal to make an emergency call, then apparently flagged down a state trooper.

Police say Sowers‘ stepfather, 63-year-old Paul Gilkey, killed Sowers‘ mother, Darlene Gilkey, and two aunts Monday before killing himself in a dispute over food being served to Sowers‘ mother, who is dying of cancer. The ill woman was unhurt.
