A would-be thief armed with a knife and tear gas attempted to rob two men Tuesday night at a Prince George’s County gas station who turned out to be off-duty Metropolitan Police Department officers, according to town of Edmonston police.

The suspect, identified as Sandy Stancil, 51, of Hyattsville, approached the officers at about 11 p.m. at the Sunoco gas station at 4836 Kenilworth Ave., police said.

When the suspect demanded money, the officers drew their service weapons and arrested him as he tried to flee. The officers, who were not in patrol vehicles, did not fire their service weapons, said Edmonston police Chief Stephen E. Walker.

“They handled the incident really well,” Chief Walker said. The suspect “was opportunistic and decided to try it and picked the wrong guys.”
