BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (AP) - Supporters of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez are calling for a long night’s vigil ahead of her surgery for thyroid cancer.
They plan to start gathering at 1 a.m. Wednesday in the capital’s Plaza de Mayo and outside the Hospital Austral, as well as at other public squares around the country. They plan to stay until she’s out of surgery.
Thyroid removal is relatively routine and doctors predict a speedy recovery. The 58-year-old leader has papillary thyroid carcinoma, and her doctors said it was detected before it spread, so her condition should curable without chemotherapy.
Vice President Amado Boudou will be in charge during the operation and for 20 days as she recovers.
