The ex-boyfriend of a Berwyn Heights woman found dead in her home tried to commit suicide Monday as officers attempted to arrest him in connection with her death.

Amber Danielle Schinault, 36, was found dead in her home Sunday afternoon in the 8600 block of 57th Avenue after a friend called police to have someone check on her welfare, Berwyn Heights Police Chief Ken Antolik said. Her neck had been slashed.

On Monday morning, officers were chasing Ms. Schinault’s ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Andrew Kugler, near the College Park Metro when he attempted suicide by cutting his wrists, police officials said. Mr. Kugler remained under care at a local hospital Monday evening for his injuries, which were not considered life threatening, Prince George’s County police spokesman Cpl. Larry Johnson said.

Mr. Kugler was charged with second-degree murder in Ms. Schinault’s death, police said.

According to Maryland court records, Ms. Schinault filed for a restraining order against Mr. Kugler in June.
