ROME (AP) - Brian De Palma and Terrence Malick are among 18 filmmakers competing for the coveted Golden Lion during the 69th edition of the Venice Film Festival, which runs from Aug. 29-Sept. 8 and opens Thursday. In keeping with recent tradition, a secret film, the 18th entry, will be announced at a later date.

“Après Mai (Something in the Air)” by Olivier Assayas, France.

“At any Price” by Ramin Bahrani; United States and Britain.

“Bella Addormentata” (Sleeping Beauty) by Marco Bellocchio, Italy and France.

“La cinquième saison” (The Fifth Season) by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth; Belgium, France and Netherlands.

“Lemale Et Ha’Chalal (Fill The Void)” by Rama Burshtein, Israel.

“È stato il figlio” (It was the Son) by Daniele Cipri; Italy and France.

`’Un giorno speciale” (A Special Day) by Francesca Comencini, Italy.

“Passion” by Brian De Palma; France and Germany.

“Superstar” by Xavier Giannoli; France and Belgium.

“Pieta” Kim Ki-duk, South Korea.

“Outrage Beyond” by Takeshi Kitano, Japan.

“Spring Breakers” by Harmony Korine, United States.

“To the Wonder” by Terrence Malick, United States.

“Sinapupunan (Thy Womb)” by Brillante Mendoza, Philippines.

“Linhas de Wellington” by Valeria Sarmiento; Portugal and France.

“Paradies: Glaube (Paradise: Faith)” by Ulrich Seidl; Austria, France and Germany.
