AUGUSTA, Maine — Kevin Raye has defeated Blaine Richardson for the Republican nomination in the 2nd District U.S. House race in Maine.

The victory by Raye sets up a rematch of the 2002 race between him and Michael Michaud, the Democrat who won the election and is now seeking his sixth congressional term.

Early, unofficial results show Raye, who is completing four terms in the state Senate, has outpolled Richardson, a three-decade Navy veteran and businessman.

Raye, of Perry, served as a top aide to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe before his legislative stint, which he finished as Senate president. He owns a century-old family mustard business in eastern Maine.

Raye far outspent Richardson, who is aligned with conservative movement.
