ANALYSIS/OPINION:

President Obama on Wednesday declared “executive privilege” to block handing over to Congress the notorious “Operation Fast and Furious” gunrunning program documents (Web, Wednesday).

I think it was wrong for Mr. Obama to do so. As a result of his action, the public is denied a full picture of what really happened, which would show if any wrongdoing occurred on the part of the executive branch.

In modern times, executive privilege has been shamefully overused, often more to protect the government from embarrassment than for national security reasons.

Perhaps Mr. Obama is exercising it to cover up a crime committed by the federal government.
