An interim CEO was appointed by Virginia Railway Express on Tuesday as it continues the search for a permanent replacement.

Richard Dalton will replace retiring CEO Dale Zehner on July 1. Mr. Dalton has worked as the company’s director of rail equipment and services since 2009. He has been in the railway business for 20 years, spokesman Mark Roeber said.

The board hired an executive search firm to run the search process, which started in May. Mr. Dalton is one of the candidates being considered for the permanent position, Mr. Roeber said.

They hope to have the position filled by September, he said.

Mr. Zehner announced his plan to retire in February. He started working at VRE in 1995 and has been the CEO since 2004.
