A standoff in a Falls Church home ended Tuesday night through the use of non-lethal force, 28 hours after it began.

Falls Church police officers responded to a call around 4 p.m. Monday regarding a domestic disturbance on the 600 block of Hillwood Avenue. Upon arriving, they found a man with a handgun who had reportedly also poured gasoline on himself and through the house, according to Falls Church police.

Two family members were also on the property, but were removed by police.

The man barricaded himself in the house and the situation continued to escalate. Extra help was called in, including the Falls Church emergency services unit and sheriff’s office, Alexandria, Arlington County and Fairfax County police departments, regional SWAT teams, and Arlington and Fairfax fire and EMS.

After officers used non-lethal force, the man surrendered and was taken to Fairfax Hospital. Felony charges are pending, Falls Church police said.
