HONOLULU (AP) — Military investigators say the 14-month-old son of a Hawaii-based Marine sergeant was unconscious for nearly a year before the toddler died from abusive head trauma.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the homicide of Zayden Lonergan, who died Monday at a Honolulu hospital. Military officials say he suffered fractures to his skull on March 19 and was taken unconscious to a federal fire station and then to a hospital. He was later taken to a long-term care facility in Ewa Beach and never regained consciousness. He was taken to a Honolulu hospital last week.

The boy’s father is Sgt. David Lonergan, who is stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay.

NCIS spokesman Ed Buice says no one is in custody and no charges have been filed.
