Police officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting near the border of D.C. and Montgomery County that wounded an officer and critically injured an armed man.

Montgomery County police said officers responded to the 8100 block of Eastern Avenue in the District about 12:40 a.m. Friday after receiving multiple reports of the sound of gunshots. When they arrived, officers encountered a man carrying a gun. A shootout ensued between police and the man, police said.

Police have not publicly identified the man and are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the departmental shooting.
