A 21-year-old Maryland man charged with murder told authorities he killed his roommate and then ate his heart and portions of his brain, according to court papers.

Alex Kinyua was charged by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office after his family members reported human remains in the Joppatowne residence that Mr. Kinyua shared with Kujoe Bonsafo Agyel-Kodie, who had been reported missing after he departed for a jog on Friday, court papers said.

A detective looked into the missing person report, but could not glean anything other than that Agyel-Kodie did not return from the house from his jog.

According to charging papers:

Antony Kinyua called the sheriff’s office late Tuesday to report that his son, Jarrod, had found what looked like human remains in the basement of the home where Alex Kinyua, also his son, lives.

Jarrod Kinyua said he found a human head and two hands inside metal bins that had been covered by a blanket in the laundry room. He confronted his brother, Alex Kinyua, who claimed the remains were not human. But Jarrod reported the grisly discovery to his father.

Upon their return to the basement, Jarrod Kinyua reported the items he had seen “were gone and that Alex Kinyua was cleaning the container he observed them in,” the court papers said.

Sheriff’s investigators attested they used a search warrant to recover the head and hands, and Alex Kinyua told police he killed Mr. Agyel-Kodie by “cutting him up with a knife” before eating some of his organs. Upon Mr. Kinyua’s direction, investigators recovered the rest of the body in a trash bin near the Town Baptist Church, court papers said.

Mr. Kinyua was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault and held in the Harford County Detention Center pending a bail hearing.
