A man was struck and killed by a garbage truck as he crossed the street in the Belle Haven area early Thursday morning, Fairfax County police said.

The pedestrian, who police have not yet identified, walked into the path of the dump truck as he crossed Richmond Highway just south of Huntington Avenue at about 1:50 a.m., police said. The 64-year-old dump truck driver tried to miss the pedestrian, but could not. After he hit the pedestrian, the driver stopped and called police.

The pedestrian was crossing an unlit portion of the road and was not in a crosswalk, said Fairfax County police spokeswoman Officer Shelley Broderick.

Police are investigating the collision, but say that speed and alcohol are not a factor for the driver.
