Five elementary school children were transported to hospitals for injuries that were not life threatening after a school bus hit a Jeep in Rockville Monday morning.

Seven people in total, including the drivers of both vehicles, were injured, said Maj. Bob Rappoport, spokesman for Rockville City Police.

The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Great Falls Road and Maryland Avenue. According to Maj. Rappoport, a Jeep Cherokee that was traveling southbound did not yield the right of way while making a left turn on Falls Road. The school bus, traveling northbound, struck the Jeep.

The bus, which was headed to Ritchie Park Elementary School, was carrying 42 children, Maj. Rappoport said.

He said the wreck caused significant traffic jams.
