Two young children were killed at a construction site in North Carolina on Sunday evening when a wall of dirt collapsed on top of them.

Emergency responders dug for hours to try to recover the bodies of a 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, The Charlotte Observer reported.

“We worked as if they were alive,” said one emergency spokesman, USA Today reported. “Times like these are very difficult. It’s devastating for the family and each and every responder.”

The children were buried about 20 feet underground, USA Today said. At least 65 emergency officials responded to the scene to assist.

The father of one of the victims called for help about 6 p.m. on Sunday, Lincoln County Emergency Services officials told various media. Sometime during the evening, the focus of the emergency mission changed from rescue to recovery, CBS said.
