Wingate University in North Carolina is on lockdown after two people were shot and killed and another airlifted to the hospital following a reported shooting near campus Wednesday night.

The victims were found at a location along East Wilson Street. It is not yet known if they are students, a local station reported.

The school was placed on lockdown at 6:17 p.m. and remains in effect.

Alert texts to students read, “There has been a shooting on East Wilson Street near the entrance to the College Park community. Law Enforcement is on the scene and directing that the University shelter in place until further notice.”

“Please remain calm,” it said. “Move to the nearest building and close and lock all doors and windows. Close all blinds and turn off the lights.”

The alert also asked students and staff to silence their cell phones and wait for further direction, the station reported.
